Rare (in UK) West Field Browning (Savage/Stevens 520)Deac' model 30 pump Action Shotgun (R12 DA0300)

West Field Browning (Stevens/Savage) Model 30 deactivated 12 bore Pump action shotgun. These shotguns were only sold under this brand name in the USA so is a rare find in the UK.

The Model 520 was designed by John Browning in 1903 and in 1904 purchased the patent. In 1920 Stevens was bought  by Savage. In 1925, the Model 520 first appeared as a store-branded gun when it is sold as the Ranger Repeater Model 30 by Sears and the Western Field Model 30 by Montgomery Wards, the first major catalogue warehouse in the USA based in a 1.25-million-square-foot (116,000 m2) building in 1908 stretching along nearly one-quarter mile of the Chicago River, north of downtown Chicago. The building, known as the Montgomery Ward & Co. Catalog House, served as the company headquarters until 1974, Sears and Montgomery Ward fought for dominance of the mail order market in the USA throughout much of the 20th Century, and it is interesting to conjecture how this example arrived in the UK. The 520/Model 30 remained in production until 1939.

A trench version was produced in 1917 but did not see service in WW1, it was issued in WW2 but withdrawn due a shortage of spares in 1943, but was once again issued during the Vietnam War, largely to Military Police.

This example is of the type manufactured under the J Stevens name between 1920 and 1924 and would therefore date from the original mid/late 1920's Montgomery Ward sales.

It has a moving bolt, trigger and safety, bolt release catch disconnected as is cartridge lift due to the unusual internal mechanism and the requirements of deactivation. Couple of small blemishes to receiver and wear to the blueing on the magazine tube, odd marks commensurate with use, wood in overall good condition.. .
