Lee Enfield SMLE MkIII* made at LSA in 1916 modified from Mk111 but not stamped with * so could be converted back if suitable stock could be found. Receiver, Barrel, Bolt, nosecap & rear sight (Rear sight contemporary WW1 re-number) are matching serial numbers, which is fairly unusual for SMLE's and explains the price. Retains magazine cut off.
Rear sight replaced with MkIII* type hence renumber . Butt disk unstamped .
The forestock has clearly been replaced as it has no provision for a volley sight (rear one has also been removed) and is stamped as made by Enfield.
By 1916 the decision to dispense with the magazine cut off, volley sights and windage adjustable rear sight coming in to effect at the factories, although BSA seems to have ignored the instruction with regard to mag cutoff's as they still come up fitted on rifles as late as 1918, perhapsy because of a disagreement with the WD earlier about the mag cutoff's.
Overall good condition. Metal retains nearly all finish, woodwork has a few very light marks, overall a lot less than would be expected from use.
2016 EU Spec deactivation, working action, removable magazine (pin and slot), field strips. See notes on new spec standard below.
