81mm Brandt Mortar
In the 1920's the French firm of Edgar Brandt developed an 81mm mortar based on the British WW1 Stokes design. The USA at this time was also working on a new mortar but when Brandt offered their mortar to the US Army it was found to be ideal and the manufacturing rights were purchased from Brandt and the new mortar entered American service in the 1930's.
This particular mortar has a Portuguese data plate, however it is absolutely identical to the standard US WW2 81mm. Bearing in mind that after WW2 both the UK and USA supplied a lot of surplus kit to Portugal much of which was brought back into the UK during the late 1980's, around this time Sexton's, 25Pr guns and accessories, 3.7" AA guns and much more was imported to the UK by various companies and these mortars arrived around this time (indeed a number of WW2 US Stuart tanks have just arrived in the UK from Portugal this year!). Having had the mortar examined by people owning US marked mortars it is our conviction that these are genuine rebadged US WW2 mortars!
This mortar comes in its transit case with many of the tools and accessories it was issued with, including the sights, it is in good condition and has a pre 1995 deactivation certificate
